Japanese for Gamers 101: Epic Fail!

You and your teammates are huddled behind a pile of sandbags, pinned down by machine-gun fire from a Nazi bunker.
“I’ll clear that bunker!” you shout into your headset.
Your grenade sails gracefully through the air, hits the side of the bunker, and bounces back into your team’s hiding place. Luckily you were logged in under your little brother’s account.

Word: 大失敗
Romanization/phonetic: dai shippai/die ship pie
Etymology: 大(big/huge) 失敗 (failure)
Definition: a complete failure; a fiasco
Origin: Common Japanese expression.

I was unable to discover an exact translation for “epic fail”, but this word is the closest equivalent that I could find. There may be a more accurate, more obscure translation out there, but this expression is easily understood by all Japanese, not just the otaku.

Other ways of indicating fail are:
失敗した (Shippai shita): Fail!
しくじった (Shikujitta): Essentially the same as above.
大しくじった (Oh shikujitta): Big fail! (Another possible translation for “epic fail”.)
失恋した (Shitsuren shita) Fail…at love.

Usage note: Because pronouns are not often used in Japanese, the above expressions can be used without alteration to direct the abuse at yourself (“I fail!”) or at others (“You/he/she/we/they/it fail!”).

Special thanks to Starfyre (creator of the awesome text-based role-playing site Shattered Realms) for the idea! Speaking of which, I am running out of ideas. So, if there are any gaming terms you want to know Japanese translations for, leave them in the comments or email me!
